Some color-mixing surprises

I tried some different color combinations in photoshop and was somewhat surprised by the results.  For example, here’s what happens with a red-orange-yellow “weft”:

I finished up a pattern that I liked and, with the help of Photoshop, managed to map out what it would look like with a black weft:
You will unfortunately have to imagine the full pattern, but it’s symmetric so that shouldn’t be too hard.

Jyoti asked (in email) whether the progression of dye mixes is linear.  The answer is no, it’s not at all linear.  Some colors are “strong” and some are “weak”.  In my observation colors with darker values are “strong” and colors with lighter values are “weak”, but I don’t know if that’s true generally.
